"As promised by the Jakarta Provincial Government, the facility should be helping to reduce waste starting in 2024. RDF Rorotan can process 2,500 tons of waste per day," he stated after inspecting waste management at the Teluk Gong Market, North Jakarta, on Wednesday.
The minister emphasized that the operation of the RDF Rorotan facility is crucial to reducing waste in the Jakarta area, which is estimated to produce eight thousand tons daily.
The delay in the RDF Rorotan's operation was caused by odor issues, which led to protests from residents.
The Jakarta Provincial Government now plans to begin operating the facility in September this year.
Currently, most of the waste is sent to the Bantargebang Integrated Landfill Site, which can no longer accommodate waste due to exceeding its capacity.
The minister explained that the landfill site remains open as no alternative site is available to accommodate Jakarta's waste.
To address this, Nurofiq conducted a review of waste management, especially waste sorting, in areas of North Jakarta, East Jakarta, and Central Jakarta.
The plan is to transport waste from these three areas to the Rorotan RDF for further processing.
The waste management focus is particularly on waste produced by households and areas, such as markets, hotels, restaurants, and cafes, which generate both organic and inorganic waste.
He noted that most waste produced in North Jakarta is inorganic, accounting for 51 percent of the 1,100 tons of waste produced daily in the area.
On the same occasion, Head of the North Jakarta Environmental (LH) Service, Edy Mulyanto, said his side continues to raise awareness to resolve the waste issue in the area and implement the plan contained in the North Jakarta waste management roadmap, as the area is a pilot project for national waste management.
RDF Rorotan is a waste management facility that converts waste into alternative fuel for power plants, cement factories, and other industries that require thermal energy.
