Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Environment has said that it will slap sanctions on hotels, restaurants, and cafes that fail to manage waste, especially in North Jakarta, which is meant to be a national model for waste management.

During a visit to an industrial park in Bekasi, West Java, on Monday, Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said that his ministry carried out monitoring in North Jakarta on Saturday (June 28, 2025) and checked the progress of waste management practices.

“Those who do not manage waste will be immediately given administrative sanctions, including all tenants, hotels, restaurants, and cafes in North Jakarta. This is aimed at reducing their waste contribution,” the minister informed.

Hotels, restaurants, and cafes in North Jakarta produce around 1,300 tons of waste per day, he highlighted. Of that amount, around 700 tons is organic waste, and the rest is inorganic waste.

The Ministry of Environment has also called for comprehensive supervision from all village heads in North Jakarta to ensure that proper waste management, including community-level waste sorting, is implemented in their respective areas.

“I will monitor North Jakarta every day to ensure its waste management is very quick,” he said.

Earlier, Minister Nurofiq had called on the North Jakarta government to expedite the implementation of its waste management road map to address the city’s waste challenges.

The minister lauded several initiatives by the local government, including the establishment of a crisis center and the training of hundreds of cleaning officers in the area.

The Indonesian government is targeting to achieve 100 percent waste management by 2029.

According to the Environment Ministry’s National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN), 34.2 million tons of waste was generated across Indonesia in 2024, based on reports from 317 districts and cities, with North Jakarta alone contributing 509,694.50 tons.
