Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq called on the North Jakarta Government to expedite the implementation of its waste management roadmap to address the area's waste challenges.

Speaking on Saturday, the minister said his side had received updates since North Jakarta was designated as a pilot project for national waste management.

"Earlier, we requested information on waste management progress in North Jakarta. They have made some advances, such as a detailed roadmap. However, I am asking for the implementation timeline to be accelerated," Nurofiq stated.

The minister lauded several initiatives by the local government, including the establishment of a crisis center and the provision of counseling for hundreds of cleaning officers in the area.

The North Jakarta Government has also distributed two trash bins in several areas to sort organic and inorganic waste.

Moreover, the ministry requested improved waste handling in the hotel, restaurant, and cafe sectors, which are among the largest waste producers in the North Jakarta area.

"This progress is underway, but I want it to be accelerated because the government's target is quite ambitious," Nurofiq remarked.

The central government aims for 100 percent waste management completion by 2029, with the current rate standing at about 30 percent.

During his visit to North Jakarta on Saturday, the minister also urged that the Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) Rorotan facility begin operations in July, using sorted waste materials.

He emphasized that the RDF Rorotan facility must process waste that has been separated into organic and inorganic categories.

RDF Rorotan is a waste management facility that converts waste into alternative fuel for power plants, cement factories, and other industries requiring thermal energy.

The facility is expected to have a waste processing capacity reaching 2,500 tons per day.
