Jakarta (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) has received the names of proposed Indonesian ambassadors for several countries, including the United States, a post that has been vacant since 2023.

“Regarding our vacant ambassadorial posts in friendly countries, I have been informed that the ambassadorial candidate names have been received by the DPR leadership,” DPR Commission I legislator T. B. Hasanuddin confirmed at the parliament complex here on Wednesday.

In addition to the United States, proposed envoys for other countries such as Japan and North Korea have also been submitted, he noted.

According to the legislator, the ambassadorial candidates will be questioned by DPR Commission I, which oversees foreign policy, after the DPR leadership forwards their names to the commission.

He emphasized that the process is intended to assess whether candidates can be endorsed for their designated posts, not to eliminate them from consideration.

"It is not a test. A test means that the candidate may pass or not," he clarified.

Hasanuddin added that parliament may suggest the executive reassign a candidate to another country if legislators believe the individual would be better suited elsewhere. Given current global economic conditions, the effects of wars, and the importance of certain countries to Indonesia—such as the United States—he stated that parliament will scrutinize the proposed Indonesian envoys more intensively.

"We will also expedite the process," he affirmed.

The issue of vacant ambassadorial posts was raised by Deputy Chair of DPR Commission I, Anton Sukartono, during a working meeting with Foreign Minister Sugiono on Monday (June 30).

Apart from the United States, Japan, and North Korea, Indonesian embassies in Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Germany, Libya, Madagascar, Mexico, Myanmar, and Poland currently have no ambassadors.

Indonesia’s permanent missions to the United Nations in New York and Geneva are also without ambassadors.
