Jakarta (ANTARA) - Five young Indonesian sport climbers will participate in an international trial by competing in the 2025 ASEAN Climbing Championship in Putrajaya, Malaysia, on July 4-6.

Their participation is part of the preparations for the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand.

The Indonesian Sport Climbing Federation has entered athletes in two disciplines -- Lead and Boulder -- to broaden their experience and foster a competitive mindset at the Southeast Asian level.

“Sending this young national team is part of our tryout program and a vital step in preparing for the 2025 SEA Games in Thailand,” FPTI Secretary General Pristiawan Buntoro noted in a written statement issued in Jakarta on Thursday.

FPTI has sent three male athletes -- Muhammad Ramzi Firmansyah, Mahesa Caesar, and Ardana Cikal Damarwulan -- and two female athletes, Alma Ariella Tsany and Nur Ismatul Sakdia.

According to Pristiawan, the trip to Malaysia serves not only as a training opportunity but also as a platform to assess the athletes' technical and physical readiness ahead of Southeast Asia’s largest sporting event.

FPTI is upbeat that these young climbers will gain valuable experience from the championship, using it as a stepping stone for future official competitions.

“This also reflects our serious commitment to strengthening the Indonesian National Team in the Lead and Boulder disciplines,” he remarked. “It aligns with our ultimate goal to qualify for the Lead discipline at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics,” he added.

Indonesia’s sport climbing scene has rapidly ascended to global prominence, culminating in a historic breakthrough at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The standout moment came when Veddriq Leonardo clinched the country’s first-ever Olympic gold medal in men’s speed climbing, clocking a blistering 4.75 seconds.

His victory not only marked Indonesia’s debut Olympic gold outside of badminton but also solidified the nation’s reputation as a rising force in the climbing world.

Alongside Veddriq, climbers like Rajiah Sallsabillah and Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi reached the semifinals and competed fiercely, showcasing Indonesia’s depth in talent and competitive spirit.
