The minister described Dr. Marwan's death in the attack as a devastating loss for the Palestinian people, the Indonesian nation, and the international medical community.
"The symbol of bravery, care, and humanity in a conflict has passed away," Sugiono stated on his personal Instagram account on Thursday.
He emphasized that the Indonesian government condemns Israeli attacks on civilians and medical workers, which constitute violations of humanitarian law.
The minister also offered his "sincere prayer, deepest sympathy, and utmost respect" to the late Dr. Marwan and his family.
The Foreign Ministry had earlier expressed Indonesia's condolences over Dr. Marwan's demise and condemned the Israeli strikes that led to it.
"Indonesia appreciates every deed, commitment, and struggle of Dr. Marwan for humanity and peace in Palestine," according to the ministry.
The ministry also reaffirmed its commitment to closely monitoring developments around the Indonesian Hospital in Gaza amid the ceaseless Israeli aggression.
According to the Palestinian news agency WAFA, Dr. Marwan Al Sultan was killed along with his wife and children in an Israeli attack in West Gaza. Their bodies were taken to Gaza's Al-Shifa Hospital.
The Indonesian humanitarian organization MER-C reported that the hospital director and his family were killed by direct Israeli strikes on their residence, with a total of nine Palestinians martyred in the Wednesday attack.
Amid the ongoing Israeli aggression in Gaza since October 7, 2023, the Indonesian Hospital has been under constant attack by Zionist forces. The latest attack in May caused major structural damage to the hospital and hindered health services.
Meanwhile, over 56,500 Palestinians in Gaza, mostly women and children, were killed, and over 133 thousand others were injured due to Israeli aggression described by many as a genocide.
