Jakarta (ANTARA) - Minister of Environment Faisol Nurofiq called on area managers to take responsibility for their own waste instead of handing it over to third parties who later dispose of it at a landfill site (TPA).

"They should no longer hand over the waste management task to third parties who eventually dump the waste at open dumping TPA," he noted in a statement on Monday.

He emphasized that commercial, residential, and culinary areas, including hotels, restaurants, and cafes (HOREKA), and shopping centers, must manage their waste independently so as not to burden the TPA.

Nurofiq made these remarks after reviewing the Fresh Market in the Pantai Indah Kapuk (PIK) area and the Mall of Indonesia (MOI) area in North Jakarta on Sunday.

"A densely populated area like this one cannot be left unsupervised. The waste management system must obey the rules, and waste must not be dumped anywhere," he stressed.

The minister then criticized the practice of transferring waste management to irresponsible third parties.

Nurofiq pointed out that waste given to third parties only ended up in illegal landfills and harmed the environment. He cited an incident in Limo, Depok, where the perpetrator received a five-year prison sentence and a fine of Rp3 billion (US$178 thousand).

Hence, the central and regional governments have regulations to ensure planned and sustainable waste management systems. In Jakarta, this is reinforced through Governor Regulation Number 102 of 2021, which requires each region to reduce, sort, and manage waste at its source independently.

Nurofiq gave area managers a one-month deadline to improve the waste management systems in accordance with the standards stipulated in the laws and regulations on waste management.

"I give a deadline of one month. The waste management system in this area must be improved and run according to the provisions. There is no room for neglect," he emphasized.
