Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) have agreed to expedite the signing of the Indonesia-EAEU Free Trade Agreement (I-EAEU FTA).

The agreement was reaffirmed during a virtual meeting between Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto—who was in Washington D.C—and Andrey Slepnev, Member of the Board for Trade of the Eurasian Economic Commission (EEC).

“This meeting is a continuation of the negotiation process for the I-EAEU FTA, while strengthening the economic partnership between Indonesia and EAEU member countries,” said Hartarto in an official statement issued in Jakarta on Friday.

Their virtual meeting follows a prior talks on the sidelines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF 2025) on June 20, which resulted in the signing of a joint statement on the substantive conclusion of the FTA negotiations.

Both ministers expressed their appreciation for the progress made by their negotiating teams and reiterated their strong commitment to promptly initiate the necessary domestic legal procedures for the formal signing of the agreement.

“We welcome the results achieved by the negotiating teams. This marks an important step toward finalizing the I-EAEU FTA,” Hartarto stated.

Minister Slepnev affirmed the EAEU readiness to finalize the legal process in coordination with its member states in the near future.

The two parties aim to complete legal scrubbing process as soon as possible, with a target of officially signing the FTA by December 2025.

Amid ongoing global trade protectionism, trade relations between Indonesia and the EAEU continue to grow. In the first quarter of 2025, bilateral trade surged 84.4 percent year-on-year, reaching US$1.57 billion.

As for investment, the EAEU recorded US$273.7 million in Indonesia, doubling the total investment realized in 2023.
