Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Creative Economy Irene Umar has emphasized that musicals are among Indonesia’s intellectual property (IP) treasures.

“I’m very proud because this is one of Indonesia’s IPs that we all grew up with,” she said after watching Sherina’s Adventure Musical (Musikal Petualangan Sherina) opening performance in Jakarta on Monday.

“An IP that can survive from childhood to adulthood, continuing to regenerate. This is an Indonesian treasure for me,” she expounded.

Umar said that the performance was the result of cross-sectoral, hexahelix collaboration between artists, businesses, and communities.

The Creative Economy Ministry is continuing to support collaboration between young people and all stakeholders.

“There is no such thing as selfishness because creativity has no limits. There is no such thing as sectoral or personal ego; there is only collaboration,” she added.

She said that the performance, a stage adaptation of the legendary film Sherina’s Adventure (Petualangan Sherina) by Mira Lesmana and Elfa Secioria, has become a significant part of Indonesian pop culture.

Umar was accompanied by director of fine and performing arts, Dadam Mahdar, to the opening performance.

In addition to Creative Economy Ministry officials, director general of cultural development, utilization, and fostering at the Ministry of Culture, Ahmad Mahendra; former head of the Nusantara Capital City Authority, Bambang Susantono; and former head of the Creative Economy Agency, Triawan Munaf, also saw the performance.

In the musical, the iconic story of Sherina and Sadam has been brought to life in a modern, immersive theater format, featuring contemporary artistic direction and rearrangements of well-loved songs. The musical coincides with the film’s 25th anniversary.

The show will run until July 20, 2025, with a total of 15 performances scheduled during the school holidays.
