Denpasar, Bali (ANTARA) - I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport in the Indonesian resort island of Bali has commenced an asphalt overlay of its runway, with work scheduled from July 2025 to May of the following year.

The airport’s general manager, Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, explained that this overlay project is part of ongoing infrastructure maintenance efforts to ensure the reliability of the runway.

“For aircraft to safely take off and land, a flat and stable surface that meets aviation safety standards is essential,” he noted in a statement cited in Denpasar City, Bali, on Wednesday.

Shahab stated that the work would be carried out daily from 2 a.m. to 7 a.m. local time over the next 10 months, adding that all airlines have been notified.

“We have issued a notice to airmen informing them that the runway will be closed during the overlay hours. Hence, we have requested airlines to adjust their flight schedules to and from I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport,” Shahab remarked.

The project will cover the entirety of the runway, which measures three kilometers in length and 45 meters in width.

He remarked that over the past two years, maintenance at the airport has focused on improving the quality and accessibility of non-flight services, such as terminal and road revitalization and the construction of pedestrian bridges.

He remarked that after evaluation, the management decided to prioritize the runway overlay this year.

“Given the runway’s vital role in airport operations, it is crucial for us to ensure that it remains in top condition,” he affirmed.

The general manager also noted that the work is necessary as Bali airport also accommodates wide-bodied aircraft, such as the Boeing 777-300 and Airbus A380-800, for international flights to and from Indonesia.

In 2024 alone, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport handled a total of 142 thousand flights, averaging 388 flights per day, making it Indonesia’s second-busiest airport.
