Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo outlined the Jakarta Provincial Government's initiatives to mainstream the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into local policies and programs.

During his presentation at the High-Level Political Forum: Local and Regional Governments Forum held at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York on Wednesday, he stated that Jakarta's aim to rank among the top 50 global cities by 2030 is closely tied to sustainable development efforts.

"This requires a significant shift in the city's appeal, infrastructure provision, bureaucratic transformation, political support, transparent public communication, and human resources quality," he noted in a press statement on Thursday.

According to Wibowo, these sustainable development efforts are helping shape Jakarta into a global city, in line with the Jakarta Provincial Government's 2030 agenda.

He then underlined several achievements of the Jakarta Provincial Government in sustainable development across areas, such as health, urban safety for women, community empowerment, and collaboration.

Pramono also reaffirmed his commitment to gender equality by creating safe and inclusive public spaces for women.

"By 2024, Jakarta will achieve the lowest Gender Inequality Index nationally due to several efforts, including women-only buses, an anti-harassment campaign on TransJakarta buses, as well as extended park hours, enhanced lighting, and improved surveillance," he explained.

He also emphasized that Jakarta's progress as a global city must be supported by stronger cross-sector collaboration.

He called for Jakarta to lead national development as a resilient, inclusive, and globally integrated city.

"Jakarta should be a city for everyone, and no one is forgotten," the governor remarked.

Pramono's participation in this forum marked a significant milestone, as it was the first time a Jakarta governor was invited by the United Nations to take part in shaping the global sustainable development agenda.

Jakarta's presence at this forum also reflects international recognition of the city's transformation into an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable global city.

Furthermore, Jakarta's participation at the UN reflects its initiative as an ASEAN Hub, which promotes Jakarta's position as a center for regional cooperation and innovation. This effort reinforces Jakarta's diplomatic role in developing a resilient and adaptive global city.
