“We have agreed with the Ministry of Agriculture that the rice varieties must be developed using specific seeds,” BRIN head Laksana Tri Handoko told Commission X of the House of Representatives (DPR) during a working meeting in Jakarta on Thursday.
“So, we are developing rice seeds that can be planted in all locations,” he added. He informed that the research aims to maximize agricultural productivity at various locations with different climate characteristics.
BRIN is also researching precision cultivation technology for plants, livestock, and fisheries.
“So, what the Ministry of Agriculture is currently using for seeds is actually the result of research from three or five years ago, with the aim of ensuring sustainable food security,” he said.
Handoko added that BRIN is currently using genetic engineering technology, such as genome sequencing, to develop new varieties.
As reported earlier, President Prabowo Subianto has made food security one of the strategic priorities of his Asta Cita vision.
The second Asta Cita goal emphasizes the importance of realizing food sovereignty by strengthening domestic production, reforming the distribution system, and utilizing modern agricultural technology.
