Director of mangrove rehabilitation at the ministry, Ristianto Pribadi, said here on Monday that the program is a part of collaboration between the Indonesian and German governments in responsible forest management and protection.
“Our main focus in Forests Program VI is mangrove rehabilitation,” he added.
He said that the rehabilitation program is centered on preserving, enhancing, and restoring mangrove habitats. “It is not just about planting, but also maintaining,” he added.
According to Pribadi, detailed plans for activities are being drawn up so that once it is implemented in the province, the program will have a positive impact on the local economy, ecology, and society.
The program will emphasize the involvement of communities living around the mangrove ecosystem.
“The Forests Program VI activities can bring real benefits to communities and economic development in Southwest Papua through the mangrove ecosystem,” he said.
In terms of ecological benefits, the program could help preserve and restore degraded mangrove areas.
Head of the Environment, Forestry, and Land Affairs Office of Southwest Papua, Julian Kelly Kambu, said the provincial government will fully support the Forests Program VI as it will ensure the sustainability of forest areas, particularly mangroves.
He noted that the program will also benefit the local community directly.
“This program is very important to be carried out, given the significant mangrove potential in Southwest Papua,” he added.
He said that the program will target two areas in Southwest Papua—Sorong city and South Sorong district.
