Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta provincial government will increase the number of accessible school buses for students with disabilities, which are specially designed for wheelchair users and the visually impaired, to 30 this year.

“There are currently 5 school buses specifically for students with disabilities, and we will add another 25 this year,” head of the Jakarta Transportation Agency, Syafrin Liputo, said during a talk show themed “Jakarta’s 5th Century Strategic Map Towards Top 50 Global Cities 2029” at Jakarta City Hall on Tuesday.

The buses, which were officially made operational in January 2024, are fitted with a hydraulic platform system for transporting wheelchairs onto the buses.

They include other facilities such as space for seven wheelchair passengers, ten seats, and space for 19 standing passengers.

They also have closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and tactile flooring to guide students with visual impairments.

The school buses for students with disabilities travel routes selected based on the location of Special Needs Schools (SLB) and the number of students requiring bus access.

The routes include Rorotan-Marunda (passing through SLB Negeri 8); Plumpang-Kemayoran (passing through SLB Negeri 9); Kalideres-YPAC Jakarta; Muara Baru-YPAC Jakarta; and Lubang Buaya-YPAC Jakarta.

“We prioritize service to schools that need it,” Syafrin said.

Meanwhile, the Jakarta provincial government will conduct bus clustering for people with disabilities who require the services.

"For the community, we need to identify them. Of course, buses won’t just serve from their front doors. We will cluster the service, and then locate the nearest bus stop or temporary shelter,” Syafrin said.
