Presiding judge Hirmawan Agung Wicaksono announced the guilty verdict during a court session on Tuesday.
Speaking to journalists after the court session, the Wamena District Court's spokesperson, Saifullah Anwar, stated that the court's panel of judges found Aske Mabel guilty of violating Article 363 of the Indonesian Criminal Code on theft and Emergency Law No.12 of 1951 on firearm possession.
He stated that the judge's sentence was lighter than the nine-year imprisonment sought by prosecutors, adding that the pieces of evidence from the convict's crime had been returned to prosecutors for use in other cases.
Evidence included four AK-2000p assault rifles bearing serial numbers 103065, 102752, 101618, and 101403, along with several magazines and bullets.
Over the past few years, armed rebel groups in Papua have frequently employed hit-and-run tactics against Indonesian security personnel and mounted acts of terror against civilians to spread fear.
Victims of these attacks have included construction workers, motorcycle taxi (ojek) drivers, teachers, students, street food vendors, and also civilian aircraft.
