Jakarta (ANTARA) - Jakarta's poverty line stood at Rp852,768 (approximately US$52) per capita per month in March 2025, higher than the national average of Rp609,160, according to Statistics Indonesia (BPS).

"This reflects the standard of living for people in Jakarta. Their spending is relatively high compared to other regions in Indonesia," said Nurul Hasanudin, head of Jakarta’s BPS office, on Friday.

The March figure marked a 0.79 percent increase from September 2024, when the capital's poverty line was Rp846,085.

The poverty line refers to the minimum monthly expenditure required to meet both food and non-food needs. Individuals whose average monthly spending falls below this threshold are considered poor.

Hasanudin explained that food made up 69.41 percent of Jakarta's poverty line, with non-food expenses accounting for the remaining 30.59 percent. The food poverty line is calculated based on the minimum cost of consuming 2,100 kilocalories per capita per day.

Rice was the single largest contributor, representing 23.99 percent of the food component, followed by cigarettes (13.73 percent), broiler chicken (7.29 percent), eggs (6.92 percent), instant noodles (3.78 percent), bread (3.40 percent), coffee (3.30 percent), and cookies or biscuits (2.84 percent).

Among non-food expenses, the top contributors were housing (40.33 percent), electricity (12.46 percent), education (8.12 percent), gasoline (7.77 percent), toiletries (4.24 percent), and transportation (3.80 percent).

As of March 2025, Jakarta had 464,870 people living below the poverty line, an increase of 15,800 people from September 2024, though only 60 fewer than in March 2024.
