Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Coordinating Ministry for Food has said that the 80,000 Red and White Village Cooperatives established across Indonesia are expected to generate more than 1.4 million new jobs.

These will include 240,000 manager positions, 400,000 staff roles, and 240,000 supervisor posts, along with job opportunities for 560,000 workers at business units, said Deputy for Coordination of Food Trade and Distribution at the ministry, Tatang Yuliono, in Jakarta on Monday.

“The recruitment will be carried out by stakeholders at the regional level to ensure alignment with each area’s local potential,” he added.

The village cooperatives are also designed to leverage e-commerce platforms in response to shifting consumer behavior and global digital trade trends.

Through digital infrastructure support and collaboration between agencies, the cooperatives would not only strengthen the equitable and affordable distribution of staple goods but also serve as a bridge for local village products to penetrate the export market.

Each cooperative is targeted to record daily transactions of around Rp5 million (approx. US$304) to Rp9 million (approx. US$548), primarily from the sales of rice, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and fertilizers.

The government is accelerating rural economic development through these cooperatives, envisioned as both distribution centers and strategic hubs for community-based growth.

State-owned enterprises involved in the program are expected to build a collaborative ecosystem that connects local producers to markets, logistics, financing, and essential public services such as clinics and pharmacies.

According to Yuliono, the initiative aims to transform cooperatives into productive, community-driven economic institutions.

President Prabowo Subianto officially launched the nationwide Red and White Village Cooperatives program—comprising 80,000 village cooperatives—on July 21 in Klaten district, Central Java.
