Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Resilience Institute (Lemhannas) emphasized the importance of strengthening food security — the country's ability to independently meet its population’s food needs — amid ongoing global geopolitical tensions.

“The current global geopolitical situation facing our nation is far from ideal. We must mitigate the risks by reinforcing our national resilience,” Lemhannas Governor Ace Hasan Syadzily stated during a seminar in Jakarta on Tuesday.

He noted that conflicts in various parts of the world demand heightened national awareness, especially regarding potential impacts on food security.

Ace cited a range of geopolitical disruptions, including the repercussions of U.S. President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs, the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, unrest in the Middle East and the Korean Peninsula, as well as the recent Thailand-Cambodia dispute.

According to Lemhannas, bolstering food security is essential, as it is a fundamental national need that must be addressed by the state. However, in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape, food security is inevitably affected.

“These highly dynamic geopolitical conditions will inevitably disrupt global supply chains, especially in terms of food,” Ace stated.

Even so, he believes the current political climate presents an opportunity for Indonesia to boost its food security without heavy reliance on other countries.

“This is the right momentum for us to strengthen our food security, so that our dependence on food imports, for example, can be reduced or eliminated,” he explained.

With a robust and independent food security system in place, Ace expressed confidence that Indonesia will remain resilient regardless of global geopolitical developments.

In addition, through the National Leadership Preparation and Strengthening Program (P4N), which has been running for about five months, Lemhannas continues to promote national self-reliance by focusing on food security.

Ace said that prospective national leaders — many of whom come from the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) and the National Police (Polri) — have been equipped with knowledge and perspectives on national resilience, particularly related to food security.

“We chose food security as our central theme because it is a deeply fundamental issue for our national resilience,” Ace concluded.
