He made the remarks in response to the PPATK’s plan to block bank accounts that have been inactive for more than three months. The measure is intended to prevent the misuse of inactive accounts, which are often exploited by irresponsible parties for criminal activities.
“The Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs will coordinate with PPATK and relevant stakeholders to protect public funds held in banks,” Gunawan said in an official press release received here on Wednesday.
The government understands the public’s concerns regarding the impact of the policy, the minister added.
Even if a customer’s account is blocked by the PPATK due to inactivity for three months, their funds will remain safe.
“The ministry will work with the PPATK and relevant stakeholders to ensure public protection over the funds they own and store in the banking system,” Gunawan reiterated.
Earlier, the PPATK revealed that it had temporarily frozen at least 28 thousand dormant accounts in 2024.
PPATK head Ivan Yustiavandana said that the temporary freezes are part of efforts to protect public interest and preserve the integrity of Indonesia’s financial system.
“The temporary suspension of dormant account transactions aims to protect account holders and prevent misuse by irresponsible parties,” he added on May 18, 2025.
He said that inactive accounts controlled by third parties can potentially be used for illegal activities such as online gambling deposits, fraud, narcotics trafficking, and other crimes.
