Lahadalia stated here on Tuesday that developing the EV battery ecosystem is one of the government's priorities in terms of downstreaming. Hence, his administration is committed to pursuing the development of that industry
He explained that materials required to produce these batteries include nickel, manganese, cobalt, and lithium.
"One of the countries we will collaborate with is Australia. All this time, we brought things from Africa. It would be more (budget-saving) to (import) from Australia because of the transportation cost," he remarked.
Some Indonesian companies have begun mining lithium in Australia, though he was unsure of the exact volume mined.
In the same statement, Deputy Coordinator of the Task Force for Downstreaming and National Energy Security Acceleration Dimas Muhamad stated that Indonesia also aims to produce EVs using primarily domestically sourced components, alongside creating the EV ecosystem.
Dimas said the government has taken measures to pursue this goal, including strengthening the domestic EV market to build an industrial supply chain and developing a local EV battery industry.
To establish the EV battery industry, Indonesia needs to collaborate with foreign investors who possess technological capabilities, he noted.
"Now, we are making sure that there is at least one Indonesian partner involved to facilitate technology transfer and knowledge sharing from these foreign investors," he emphasized.
