Jakarta (ANTARA) - Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono emphasized that Indonesia's marine conservation areas must be expanded to 97.5 million hectares by 2045.

"We strictly want Indonesia's marine conservation expansion to reach 97.5 million hectares in 2045," he remarked at the launch of the Indonesia Blue Food Assessment (BFA) and Indonesia Blue Economy Index (IBEI) in Jakarta on Wednesday.

As part of the blue economy policy for Golden Indonesia 2045, the ministry prioritizes the expansion of marine conservation areas to sustainably maintain marine ecology.

However, despite serving as habitats for marine biota to thrive, several conservation areas are still being violated.

To this end, the ministry targets expanding Indonesia's marine conservation areas to 97.5 million hectares by 2045, a goal the minister hopes will receive support from the Ministry of National Development Planning.

Trenggono also affirmed that crossing conservation areas has been banned in Bali and the Lombok Strait.

"The conservation areas are also prohibited from being encroached upon or transited by cargo ships, passenger ships, or fishing vessels," he remarked.

On the same occasion, Trenggono also noted that his ministry has launched the Gemar Ikan program to promote fish consumption and educate the public about nutrition.

This program is said to align with the government's Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program that aims to prevent stunting and improve the quality of human resources.

This commitment is reaffirmed at the global level through Indonesia's participation in the Aquatic Blue Food Coalition to strengthen food security, nutrition, climate resilience, and biodiversity.

"These strategic steps align with the five priority programs in the blue economy strategy in a bid to optimize marine and fishery potential sustainably to support economic growth and protect ocean sustainability," he stated.
