Palangka Raya (ANTARA) - The Communication, Informatics, Statistics, and Encryption Office (Diskominfo) of Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, has launched a digital literacy program targeting junior high school students.

"Through this initiative, we aim to help students become more intelligent, wise, and capable of using the internet responsibly, especially when navigating the increasingly complex challenges of the digital world," Iin Carolina, the public relations officer of Palangka Raya Diskominfo, stated in Palangka Raya on Wednesday.

She noted that the rapid development of digital technology and information has significantly increased internet usage among students.

However, she emphasized that this trend is often not matched by sufficient digital literacy, particularly in terms of digital safety, ethical use of social media, and the productive and positive use of technology.

"That is why we are conducting this outreach—to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to face challenges in the digital era," she stated.

Students are also encouraged to learn how to protect personal data, engage responsibly on social media, and distinguish valid from misleading information to avoid the spread of hoaxes and misinformation.

In addition to raising awareness of digital security, the program aims to foster critical thinking among students when encountering harmful content online.

"With proper digital literacy, students are expected to create a healthy digital ecosystem within both their schools and communities," she remarked.

Meanwhile, the principal of SMPN 12 Palangka Raya, Balimbuk, expressed appreciation for Diskominfo's outreach initiative.

"We welcome this program. Hopefully, our students will learn how to avoid online scams and understand the importance of maintaining a responsible digital footprint," he affirmed.

He also expressed hope that the program would help shape a digitally skilled younger generation that can tackle the challenges of the information age and serve as role models in building a positive digital culture in society.
