Jakarta (ANTARA) - Trade Minister Budi Santoso has said that the circulation of illegally imported products has recorded a decline after the government conducts routine monitoring and inspections in high-risk areas.

“The trend is indeed decreasing, but it means it hasn’t stopped. So, if there is no monitoring and inspection, it will increase again,” the minister informed in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He said that the Ministry of Trade is continuing to coordinate with all ministries and institutions to prevent the entry of illegal imports.

According to the minister, with active monitoring, the entry of illegal products will continue to decline.

Further, he said that the majority of illegal importers are new players. “Most of them are new, so the trend is decreasing. Thank God, it has decreased and hopefully, in the future, there will be no more,” he said.

Meanwhile, director general of consumer protection and trade compliance (Dirjen PKTN) at the ministry, Moga Simatupang, said that confiscated illegal goods will be destroyed by business actors under the supervision of civil servant investigators (PPNS).

“The destruction process will begin after the verification process is complete and then await the business’s readiness. The timing depends on preparations as it needed the site and location for destruction,” he added.

The ministry recently confiscated illegally imported goods, including tires, plastic raw materials, ceramics, and food and beverage products worth Rp26.4 billion.

The goods were seized during monitoring in four regions—Surabaya, Makassar, Medan, and Bekasi. The surveillance was conducted from January to July this year through post-border customs areas.
