“Women of South Sulawesi possess a strong identity shaped by noble cultural and social values such as siri’ na pacce, courage, and ethical conduct,” Fatmawati noted in a statement in Makassar on Thursday.
She highlighted that respectful politics remains a distinctive trait of Bugis-Makassar women in leadership.
“South Sulawesi women are defined by siri’ na pacce, courage, and politeness. Our trademark is respectful politics, and that is the principle I always uphold in every leadership role,” she stated while delivering a keynote speech at the Intermediate Training (Latihan Kader II) of the Makassar Branch of the Islamic Students Association (HMI).
In the warm and interactive forum, Fatmawati shared her journey from chairing the Family Welfare Movement (PKK) and serving as Deputy Mayor of Makassar to becoming the first female Deputy Governor of South Sulawesi.
She also addressed challenges faced by women in politics, including gender discrimination and the dominance of patriarchal culture.
Nevertheless, she affirmed that opportunities for women’s participation in public leadership are now expanding.
“We already have regulations and programs in place. Many women now lead strategic institutions, from heads of departments to sub-district heads. What matters is how ready we are to seize these opportunities,” she explained.
Fatmawati encouraged HMI members, especially women, to take on strategic roles and not hesitate to dream big.
“Know your potential. Never be afraid to dream big and take action. Women must become decision-makers, not just passive participants,” she remarked.
Meanwhile, Sarah Agus Salim, the first woman to chair the HMI Makassar Branch, viewed Fatmawati’s presence as a powerful form of affirmation.
“We are proud. In Bugis-Makassar history, women have always played major roles—from the authors of I La Galigo to traditional leaders. Now, it is our turn to carry that legacy forward,” she remarked.
