“President Prabowo has asked the Minister of Transportation to open as many international flights as possible from abroad directly to destinations in Indonesia,” Head of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), Hasan Nasbi, said at a press conference at the PCO office, Kwarnas Building, Jakarta, on Thursday.
He added that the directive was issued by Prabowo during the Plenary Cabinet Meeting held at the Presidential Office, Presidential Palace Complex, Jakarta, on Wednesday.
Nasbi said the president’s instruction aims to maximize the tourism sector’s potential as a source of national income and foreign exchange. President Prabowo expects the move to reduce dependence on Jakarta’s airport for flight connectivity and increase foreign tourist arrivals to regional destinations.
“So, they do not have to go through Jakarta first, but can go directly to their destinations,” he explained.
According to Nasbi, the head of state has requested that airports with sufficient infrastructure and operational readiness be opened immediately for international flights.
The tourism sector is considered to have a broad economic impact, including job creation and expanded business opportunities in the regions.
“This tourism sector will create numerous jobs and also has enormous potential for state revenue,” he said.
Earlier, during a state visit to Russia in mid-June, President Prabowo said Indonesia is open to increasing the number of direct flights from Russia to various Indonesian cities.
“We are open to opportunities. Please feel free to add flights, not only to Bali, but to other cities in Indonesia. We are open to direct flights from Russia,” he added.
