At the 2025 Indonesian Science, Technology, and Industry Convention (KSTI) in Bandung, West Java, Friday, she highlighted some top universities that generate substantial income, such as Stanford University, which benefits from its human resources and partnerships with the private sector.
“As of today, Stanford University generates US$2.7 trillion in annual revenue, ranking it one of the top 10 economies in the world,” Christie highlighted.
Another notable institution is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which earns around US$2 trillion annually, she added. She contrasted this with the University of Kansas, a medium-sized university in the United States, which generates about US$7.8 million each year.
The deputy minister emphasized that these universities are able to secure large funding as they are centers of knowledge.
"Knowledge attracts money. Knowledge attracts investment," she stated.
When applied effectively, knowledge benefits both industries and higher education, she noted. Consequently, she encouraged national universities to attract investment by pursuing research and advancing knowledge.
KSTI 2025 is hosted on August 7-9, 2025. More than 350 leaders of higher education institutions and one thousand top researchers from Indonesia are participating.
The convention focuses on integrating research, higher education, and industry across the eight prioritized sectors, ranging from food, energy, health, to digitalization, and manufacturing. The sectors were chosen based on Indonesia's needs to advance toward technological self-sufficiency and to enhance global competitiveness.
Some activities at the convention include discussions, knowledge-sharing sessions with global Nobel laureates and academics, as well as the exhibition of research and industrial innovations.
