Jakarta (ANTARA) - The development of Bulango Ulu Dam in Bone Bolango, Gorontalo province, is an effort to build food resilience in the eastern parts of Indonesia, Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo has stressed.

According to Hanggodo, the dam, which is one of the national strategic infrastructure projects, is set to be completed by year-end. As of August 1, 2025, the physical construction of the dam was 85.6 percent complete, he informed.

He said here on Tuesday that the dam project reflects the government’s commitment to pursue food resilience by ensuring the availability of water, including for irrigation, and flood control.

Once completed, the dam will have a total storage capacity of 140.95 million cubic meters and an effective volume of 58.61 million cubic meters. It will move 2,200 liters of water per second to irrigate 4,950 hectares of farmland.

The dam is expected to control floods over an area of 629 hectares, support a microhydropower plant with a capacity of 4.96 MW, and boost local tourism.

The project is being carried out in two phases. The first phase will focus on building the main dam, access roads, and a bridge. The second will focus on the installation of hydromechanical systems and the establishment of other facilities, among other things.

The ministry will also develop supporting public facilities such as a dam management unit (UPB), staff housing, a small place of worship, a multipurpose hall, gates, and guard posts. This is aimed at making the dam complex a center for operations and monitoring after completion.

According to Hanggodo, one of the challenges faced in the project has been land acquisition. Only 75.91 percent of the total 1,723 plots—or 1,231 plots—required for the project have been acquired so far.

According to the Public Works Ministry, the development of the physical infrastructure is being prioritized to meet the target schedule. Other facilities, such as plugging and impounding, hydromechanical systems, and landscaping, will be readied gradually by mid-2026.
