Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Public Works has said that the Ciawi Dam and Sukamahi Dam in West Java are now functional and are capable of controlling floods.

"The Ciawi and Sukamahi dams have already shown their performance," director general of water resources at the ministry, Lilik Retno Cahyadiningsih, said here on Friday.

"During the recent flood, the Ciawi Dam was able to hold two million cubic meters of water and the Sukamahi Dam 0.3 million cubic meters," she expounded.

She further said that the reason flooding still occurred in Puncak, Bogor, Bekasi, and parts of Jakarta this week was extreme weather.

"The rainfall in those areas was extremely high. Very extreme. The usual measurement is more than 150 mm per day, and the recent rainfall was 356 mm per day," she explained.

As a long-term measure, the Ministry of Public Works plans to build a retention pond in Bekasi to anticipate flood disasters, she informed.

"However, this has not yet been included in the budget. For the short term, we are carrying out emergency handling," she said.

Heavy rainfall pounded several areas, especially in the Greater Jakarta region, and caused flooding at a number of locations, including Bekasi city, West Java, earlier this week.

In response, Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono, said that the government is moving quickly to carry out emergency response measures to help affected communities, including rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts.

He added that the government is not only focused on disaster emergency handling, but also ensuring that basic infrastructure is ready to reduce the burden on the community and speed up the rehabilitation and reconstruction process.
