In a statement received from his office in Jakarta on Friday, Social Affairs Minister Saifullah Yusuf assured that the needs of disaster-hit residents have been met.
“We have sent logistical assistance to meet the emergency needs of those hit by the disasters in Sukabumi. The aid was delivered from the Palamarta Center warehouse in Sukabumi, enabling quick distribution to the victims,” he stated.
The logistical items include one multipurpose tent, 20 portable tents, 39 blankets, 52 beds, and over 100 packages of children’s clothing.
The Ministry of Social Affairs has also deployed its social disaster preparedness cadets (Tagana) from the districts of Sukabumi and Pangandaran to assist with evacuating victims and distributing logistics.
Yusuf affirmed that the ministry is working hand in hand with the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the National Police (Polri), the National Search and Rescue Agency, the Sukabumi Social Affairs Office, and other relevant institutions to address the emergency situation.
According to the minister, the landslides and flooding have forced 405 people to evacuate their homes. They are currently taking shelter at three different locations across three sub-districts.
Prolonged heavy rainfall in Sukabumi on Thursday (March 6) triggered landslides in Cikujang Village. The situation worsened due to floods in several areas, exacerbated by inadequate drainage systems.
Reports indicate that in Cijangkar Village, the disaster claimed the life of a seven-year-old child, while two other residents have been declared missing. At least six homes were severely damaged.
Some residents have returned to their homes to clear away the mud as the floodwaters started to recede. Nevertheless, ongoing light to moderate rainfall continues to pose a threat of additional disasters.
