Jakarta (ANTARA) - The National Archives of Indonesia (ANRI) announced that five documentary heritages, registered in UNESCO's Memory of the World (MoW) program, can serve as references for the Indonesian government in formulating policies.

"The information contained in these documentary heritages can be utilized by the public for the development of science, as research sources, and even as a reference for the government in making policies," ANRI Head Mego Pinandito remarked here on Wednesday.

Pinandito stated that the successful registration of Indonesia's documentary heritage in the MoW marks the country's effort to preserve, protect, improve access to, and share these works with the international community.

He also cited the proverb, "Experience is the best teacher,” adding that, in the context of documentary heritage, it means using the records contained in documentary heritage as the best teacher to shape a better future for the nation.

Based on the UNESCO General Meeting on April 17, 2025, Indonesia succeeded in inscribing five documentary heritage collections into the MoW register:

  • The Kartini Archives – a joint nomination by ANRI with the National Archives of the Netherlands and Leiden University Library.
  • The Archives of the Establishment of ASEAN – a joint nomination by ANRI with the National Archives of Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand.
  • The Archives of Traditional Javanese Dance Art of Mangkunegaran – a single nomination from Indonesia by ANRI and Pura Mangkunegaran.
  • The Manuscript of Syair Hamzah Fansuri – a joint nomination by the National Library of Indonesia and the National Library of Malaysia.
  • The Manuscript of Sang Hyang Siksa Kandang – a single nomination from Indonesia by the National Library.
According to Pinandito, the recognition of these five archives marks the start of efforts to strengthen archival diplomacy as part of Indonesia's soft power, by leveraging the nation's cultural wealth, natural resources, and various other strengths.
