Through the Kampung Haji initiative in Mecca, Indonesian pilgrims will gain access to high-quality, comfortable lodging facilities. The area is planned to be developed into a comprehensive service hub catering to worship needs, including health care clinics, and Hajj pilgrimage training, all in a strategic location.
“This initiative is expected to enhance comfort, safety, and efficiency for millions of Indonesian pilgrims traveling for Hajj and Umrah each year,” Danantara CEO Rosan Roeslani noted in a statement received in Jakarta on Thursday.
Roeslani highlighted that the recent working visit to Jeddah and Mecca demonstrates the agency’s full commitment to overseeing the project, in line with President Prabowo Subianto's directives.
“We will oversee this process from the very beginning until it is realized, so Indonesian pilgrims can have representative and decent facilities during their pilgrimage,” he affirmed.
During his visit, Roeslani also held meetings with Saudi Arabian authorities, including the Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites (RCMC), which oversees planning, development, and service facility improvements in Mecca and the Holy Sites.
Together with the Indonesian Hajj Management Agency (BP Haji), Danantara also met with representatives from the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and the Ministry of Investment to discuss the project's vision.
“We are not only focused on proximity to the Masjid al-Haram but also pay close attention to the comfort, safety, and quality of facilities for pilgrims. Our target is to ensure that all aspects — from technical feasibility and legal compliance to sustainable management — are thoroughly addressed,” Roeslani emphasized.
The Saudi government recently announced new regulations allowing foreign entities, including organizations and companies, to legally own property in Mecca.
These regulations are expected to be followed by additional provisions to be issued soon, opening the opportunity for Indonesia to secure strategic assets in the Holy Land under a safe and legal framework.
The Kampung Haji project is part of the Indonesian government’s broader initiative to improve Hajj and Umrah services for its citizens while also strengthening strategic ties with Saudi Arabia.
