Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) has commended the swift actions of President Prabowo Subianto's government in addressing various strategic issues.

This was conveyed by DPR Speaker Puan Maharani at the Annual Session of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the Joint Session of the DPR and Regional Representatives Council (DPD) at the Parliamentary Complex in Jakarta on Friday.

She noted that the issues include mining activities in Raja Ampat and disputed islands between Aceh and North Sumatra.

"The quick response should be appreciated because it reflects the government's commitment to the public’s interests. However, it would be better if the measures are taken based on thorough and careful planning," Maharani remarked.

She further said that going forward, the community expects quick action from the government to tackle various other issues.

"The government must always be careful in exercising its power because power is essentially meant to serve, help, and empower the people," she emphasized.

The annual legislative sessions are held every August 15 ahead of Indonesia's 80th Independence Day on August 17. This year's celebration carries the theme "United and Sovereign, Prosperous People, and Advanced Indonesia."

In his State of the Nation Address at the session, President Prabowo highlighted that Indonesia's ultimate purpose of independence is to free the people from poverty.

"Our country must be sovereign in its economy and achieve food self-sufficiency," he said.

Prabowo expressed optimism that Indonesia will achieve its food self-sufficiency goal with the support of its diverse natural resources.

"The challenge we are facing is preserving and managing our resources so that the ideals of independence can be realized as soon as possible," he remarked.
