..even though at times some notes may be out of tune, all components must continue to play the same song—Indonesia Raya,Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani emphasized that the separation of powers among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches is not intended to weaken one another, but rather to ensure that no single authority stands above the rest.
“The executive, legislative, and judicial powers must be separated—not to undermine each other, but to ensure that no single power stands above the others,” Puan said during the 2025 Annual Session of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) and the Joint Session of the DPR and Regional Representative Council (DPD) at the Nusantara Building, Parliament Complex, Jakarta, on Friday.
She stated that the distribution of powers among the Government, DPR, DPD, MPR, Supreme Court (MA), and Constitutional Court (MK) is not merely a division of authority but a unified force aimed at achieving the national goals.
All three pillars of power, she noted, are built upon the same foundation: the sovereignty of the people.
Puan further explained that the DPR acts as the guardian of the people’s conscience and the Constitution, ensuring that the exercise of power remains loyal to the people, adheres to constitutional principles, and upholds democracy guided by wisdom and deliberation.

The DPD, she added, serves as a conduit for regional aspirations at the national level, collecting, channeling, and articulating local voices within the framework of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court and Constitutional Court function as the guardians of legal supremacy and are integral to a civilized democratic system. They are expected to exercise their powers consistently, without overstepping the constitutional boundaries.
“Like a constitutional orchestra, even though at times some notes may be out of tune, all components must continue to play the same song—Indonesia Raya,” Puan said, referring to the national anthem.
The Indonesian Parliament convened the 2025 Annual Session of the MPR and the Joint Session of the DPR and DPD at the Nusantara Building in Jakarta on Friday, August 15.
The sessions are held in the lead-up to the 80th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia, which carries the theme: “United in Sovereignty, Prosperous People, Advanced Indonesia.”
