"Happy National Press Day 2025! The mass media and press personnel must remember their role as watchdogs of the government's activities and as defenders of people’s rights," Maharani stated here on Sunday.
Maharani acknowledged the significant role played by the media during the 2024 General Elections, including the presidential election, the legislative election, and the regional head election (Pilkada).
While she recognized the press as a key factor in the success of the general elections, she reminded them that their responsibilities do not end once the elections are over.
"The media must not only oversee the policies of government officials but also ensure that underrepresented voices, such as minorities and marginalized groups, are heard," she added.
Maharani also praised the dedication of journalists who have continued to work diligently amid the rapid flow of information. The advancement of digital technology demands media workers exercise caution in producing news.
"With so much information available, verifying facts is crucial to prevent the spread of false news," she said.
Moreover, Maharani pointed out the challenges in the press industry today, noting that many media organizations have shut down and let go of skilled journalists in recent years. Hence, she called on the public to support the national press.
"The community plays an essential role in supporting a competent and quality national press, including by subscribing to media outlets with a track record of good journalism," she stated.
The public support for a healthy and responsible press is vital, such as supporting the mass media through subscriptions and funding assistance as the media industry faces tough times, she added.
