Jakarta (ANTARA) - Thousands of citizens selected to attend the Seconds to the Proclamation of Independence ceremony began gathering at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Sunday morning.

Many of them, including some who came from Cileungsi and Bekasi, West Java, wore their best attire—ranging from traditional outfits and kebaya with matching cloth, to formal suits paired with peci caps.

Yuli, 67, said she left her house at 5 a.m. This was her third time attending the ceremony at Merdeka Palace.

She expressed her enthusiasm not only for the festive atmosphere but also for the souvenirs given to participants.

“There is a bag with the 80th Indonesia anniversary logo, filled with all sorts of things—there’s a fan, snacks and drinks, a book,” Yuli said.

Meanwhile, Devi and Rasti also attended the 80th Independence Day ceremony at Merdeka Palace in traditional attire.

They said they had stayed overnight at a nearby hotel to avoid being late.

Rasti, attending the ceremony for the first time, said she was excited to witness the National Flag-Raising Troop (Paskibraka) raise the Red and White heritage flag in person.

Several gates around Merdeka Palace were opened from 6:30 a.m. to welcome selected participants. At the barricade, they queued for security checks by the Presidential Security Force (Paspampres), before being directed to the souvenir table.

After collecting their souvenirs, participants proceeded to their designated seating areas.

While waiting for the ceremony to begin, various musical performances were presented. Many participants also took the opportunity to capture memorable moments at Merdeka Palace.

The ceremony was led by President Prabowo Subianto as inspector.
