“Our hope is that this festival will further raise awareness of Pacu Jalur, not only in Indonesia but also globally,” Fadli said in a press statement from Jakarta on Thursday.
He emphasized that promoting culture is a constitutional mandate, as stated in Article 32, Paragraph 1 of the 1945 Constitution, which declares that the state is obligated to advance Indonesia’s culture within global civilization.
“For that reason, Pacu Jalur must continue to be promoted until it becomes recognized on the international stage,” he added.
In her opening remarks, Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana commended the Riau Provincial Government and the Kuantan Singingi District for their commitment to preserving and developing the Pacu Jalur tradition.
She noted that the festival aligns with national policy to promote high-potential regional events.
“Pacu Jalur is a clear example of a festival that has successfully evolved into a cultural icon and a major tourism attraction. We hope this event will become a regional tourism favorite, drive the local economy, and provide lasting benefits to surrounding communities,” said Widiyanti.
Echoing this sentiment, Riau Governor Abdul Wahid expressed hopes that the festival would not just be a celebration for the people but also a blessing for Riau’s tourism industry.
“May Pacu Jalur bring positive impacts to local MSMEs and the community’s economy,” said Abdul Wahid.
Meanwhile, Kuantan Singingi District Head Suhardiman Amby voiced his aspiration for Pacu Jalur to be elevated to a national cultural icon and serve as a gateway for international tourism.
Pacu Jalur is a traditional longboat rowing race unique to Kuantan Singingi, with roots dating back to the 17th century. Passed down through generations, the tradition remains actively practiced by local communities and was officially recognized in 2015 as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Indonesia under the domain of Oral Traditions and Expressions.
This year, 288 traditional longboats, known as jalur, from various regions are competing for trophies and special prizes.
Held from August 20 to 24, 2025, the festival is expected to attract more than 1.5 million visitors. The festival’s opening was marked by a traditional ceremonial procession honoring guests, symbolizing respect and cultural acceptance.
