Pangkalpinang (ANTARA) - Bangka Belitung Islands Governor Hidayat Arsani announced that Chinese investors will build Indonesia's largest tin ore processing plant (smelter) to support President Prabowo Subianto's goal of increasing domestic downstream processing.

The smelter, with an estimated investment of 1.5 to 2 trillion rupiahs, will produce tin solder and tin wire, Arsani stated here on Saturday.

The project is led by Tong Fang, a major Chinese company with extensive experience in tin processing. If the construction stays on schedule, the plant is expected to begin operations within the next year.

The location for the smelter is projected to be in Central Bangka. "This investment is anticipated to boost economic growth and create new job opportunities, with 70 percent of the workforce coming from local residents," the governor said.

To ensure optimal operations, the provincial government will collaborate with PT Timah Tbk, which will serve as the primary supplier of tin ore.

Tong Fang has been in the downstream sector since 1971 and has expanded to various countries, including Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, Turkey, and Mexico, Arsani said.
