Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Jakarta provincial government and the Istanbul city government, Turkey, have agreed to collaborate on municipal waste management, including sharing knowledge on landfill operations and compost production.

The partnership was formalized through the signing of a Letter of Intent (LoI) between PT Jakarta Propertindo (Jakpro) and Istanbul's waste management company, ISTAC, in Istanbul on August 21.

The collaboration also covered the management of ship waste, medical and industrial waste, city and sea surface cleanup, as well as energy management and carbon credits.

"This waste management collaboration is a major step towards improving environmental quality and the efficiency of public services in Jakarta," said Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno in an official statement received in Jakarta on Friday.

Karno stated that Istanbul's experience in waste management and marine cleanliness technology can serve as a reference for acceleration in Jakarta, particularly within the framework of a circular economy and performance-based financing.

"Our targets are clear: a cleaner city, more efficient service costs, and the creation of green jobs," he said.

Furthermore, the partnership will open up discussion spaces for consulting and management services, encourage reciprocal visits to strengthen institutional ties, and engage in additional activities such as research, training, cultural exchanges, and information sharing.

Meanwhile, Acting Mayor of Istanbul, Nuri Aslan, stated that the Jakpro–ISTAC collaboration will be a concrete example of a results-oriented sister city partnership.

Istanbul, he stated, was ready to facilitate technical exchanges and support pilot projects in Jakarta, while encouraging cross-sector collaboration in culture and tourism to strengthen community ties.

As a follow-up, Jakarta and Istanbul have agreed to form a joint team to develop a roadmap, determine priority projects, and establish a monitoring and evaluation mechanism.

The achievements of the joint program will also be published periodically to ensure transparency and accountability for the residents of both cities.
