Jakarta (ANTARA) - Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has said that his ministry will assist North Jakarta in stepping up waste management efforts as the city has been designated a model for other regions in the country.

“I have a big hope for North Jakarta, which has been designated as one of the barometer cities of waste management in this country,” he said at the “Environmental Generation Commitment Declaration” event here on Tuesday.

North Jakarta has been chosen as a model since it produces approximately 8 thousand tons of waste per day.

Most of this waste remains unmanaged and ends up at the Bantargebang Landfill. Its volume has now reached 55 million tons—about the height of a 20-story building.

Nurofiq added that Jakarta’s funding, technology, and human resources are considered the most capable for improving waste management. Hence, they are expected to set an example for other regions, he informed.

To this end, he asked all parties to take measures such as intensifying waste sorting so that the waste can be used for some purpose.

For instance, organic waste can be used for composting and inorganic waste can be processed into Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF), for which a processing facility has been established in Rorotan, North Jakarta.

The Ministry of Environment has also asked area managers in North Jakarta to manage their own waste to reduce the volume of waste that ends up in the Bantargebang Landfill.

Those asked to carry out management include malls, housing complexes, and schools.

According to the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN), waste generation in Jakarta reached 3.17 million tons in 2024, with daily waste generation reaching 8,688 tons.

As per the SIPSN, 34.2 million tons of waste was generated across Indonesia in 2024, based on reports from 319 districts and cities. Of the total, the volume of unmanaged waste was recorded at 18.1 million tons.
