Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Eddy Soeparno called for the collaboration of the Regional People's Representative Councils (DPRDs) of districts and cities to address waste management problems.

This was conveyed during the Local Legislator Fellowship forum attended by DPRD members from various districts and cities, held in Jakarta on Friday.

In a statement received on Saturday, he explained that as part of the MPR, he is focusing on the constitution's mandate of meeting people's rights to a clean and healthy environment.

"Within the MPR, I initiated a new initiative to focus on the fulfillment of the people's rights to a clean and healthy environment in accordance with the 1945 Constitution," he said.

This is deemed crucial because, according to him, Indonesia is currently facing a waste crisis. From 56 million tons of waste generated in a year, only 40 percent of it is managed.

"It causes not only environmental problems but also prolonged health and social problems," he remarked.

To this end, he urged the DPRDs of districts and cities to collaborate in tackling waste as part of efforts to fulfill people's rights.

"We have met several mayors and district heads who are having troubles with waste. We are ready to facilitate them, especially with waste-to-energy technology," the MPR deputy speaker affirmed.

Furthermore, he also asked for support from the DPRDs for the efforts of Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan, who is currently still finalizing the revision of Presidential Regulation Number 38 of 2018 on the processing of waste to energy.

"The hope is that this new presidential regulation will make waste management more integrated with the adoption of the waste-to-energy technology, supported by sufficient budget commitment and attractive investment," he said.
