Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) will follow up on allegations of food trays from the Free Nutritional Meal Program (MBG) containing pork fat through laboratory testing.

"We will follow up on this issue through testing, as our laboratory is equipped to run it," the head of BPOM, Taruna Ikrar, spoke to the media on Wednesday.

The laboratory testing will be carried out to clarify the issue, he added.

While not providing a specific testing time, Ikrar confirmed that laboratory testing will be conducted soon.

"We will follow up as soon as possible," he affirmed.

He explained there are two testing models conducted by his party, with the first one being a DNA test.

From this test, the agency can determine whether pork DNA, glycerin, gelatin, or other elements are present.

Besides the swab test, the BPOM is also capable of laboratory testing on the metal of the MBG food tray.

"For metal testing, we will collaborate with the standards agency from the Ministry of Industry. There is a specific process where the porcelain can be peeled for inspection," Ikrar addressed.

He mentioned that the agency will also coordinate with the National Nutrition Agency (BGN), the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH), and the National Standardization Agency (BSN) to determine further details regarding this issue.

However, he emphasized that BPOM's authority is limited to ensuring food safety, not determining the halal status of the tray.

Previously, the Head of the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), Hasan Nasbi, also responded to the circulating news regarding the alleged pork fat content in the Chinese-made MBG Program trays.

He said the issue could be proven through BPOM laboratory testing.

"The proof for the trays can be tested later. Once the tray arrives, it can be tested by the BPOM or at independent laboratories," Nasbi said.

He also urged the people to verify any circulating information with the relevant authorities to avoid causing public unrest.

He said that so far, no evidence indicates the product contains pork fat.
