Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has conveyed condolences over the death of Affan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi (ojol) driver killed after being struck by a police tactical vehicle during a protest in Jakarta on Thursday night.

"On behalf of myself and the government of the Republic of Indonesia, I extend my deepest condolences," he said in a video statement on Friday.

Prabowo said he had been closely monitoring developments as protests around the Parliamentary Complex reflected growing public dissatisfaction with the House of Representatives (DPR). He admitted being deeply shaken by the tragedy and assured that the government would provide support to Kurniawan's family.

"I am deeply saddened by this incident. The government will guarantee the livelihood of his family, with special attention to his parents and siblings," he said.

The president's statement followed Thursday's mass protest that escalated at night after a Mobile Brigade (Brimob) tactical vehicle was caught on video plowing into Kurniawan.

The incident sparked outrage and prompted protesters to gather at the Brimob headquarters in Kwitang, Central Jakarta, where tensions flared until Indonesian Armed Forces (TNI) personnel intervened the following morning to urge calm.

National Police (Polri) Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo has visited Kurniawan's family at a Jakarta hospital, issued a public apology, and pledged a thorough investigation.

Meanwhile, Head of the Police Professional and Security Division (Propam) Inspector General Abdul Karim confirmed that seven Brimob officers inside the vehicle had been questioned and assured the probe would be carried out transparently.
