"The government needs to collaborate extensively with many educational institutions to prepare this country for facing AI. It needs collaboration with many people, particularly in terms of digital literacy," Communication and Digital Affairs Minister Meutya Hafid said in her statement received here on Friday.
Indonesia, comprising 280 million people, needs digital literacy so they can utilize AI properly, she noted. The minister opined that Udayana University's measure to develop AI for cultural and tourism goals is right.
She opined that what campuses can do on top of raising digital literacy is tapping into the potential of the region in their case of AI utilization. In Bali's case, since the region's potential lies in tourism and culture, the utilization is aimed at the two aspects.
However, some things still need to be addressed, she said, such as connectivity and regulation. Hence, she pushed for government and private sectors to pursue collaborative efforts in ensuring vast connectivity and network across the country.
The minister confirmed that the government prepares regulations so AI utilization can benefit people in a safe manner. She explained that the planned regulation can take the form of a Government Regulation or Presidential Regulation.
"First, Government Regulation on the AI roadmap, and then pertaining to AI particularly in terms of ethics and security," she added.
In the same statement, Udayana University's Rector, I Ketut Sudarsana, stated that the institution is ready to support the development of AI based on local wisdom.
"We focus on cultural affairs and tourism. (We might also) expand to aspects pertaining to the development of food resilience, industry, and sustainable environment," he explained.
