Jakarta (ANTARA) - Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Nezar Patria, clarified that the summons of social media platform representatives like Meta and TikTok was part of ongoing content moderation efforts, not related to recent demonstrations.

“That’s not what they meant—it’s not about the demonstrations. It’s about content moderation, which has been ongoing for some time,” Nezar said at the Ministry’s office here on Friday.

He explained that the government works with platform providers to curb harmful content, such as online gambling and other illegal material.

“We’ve long collaborated to ensure platforms comply with community guidelines and regulations,” he added.

Content moderation includes monitoring, reviewing, and managing user-generated content to prevent the spread of disinformation, slander, and hate speech.

Another deputy minister of the ministry's, Angga Raka Prabowo, previously announced plans to summon platform providers to discuss provocative content online.

He urged platforms to help maintain a healthy democratic space.

“This kind of content undermines democracy. If someone expresses an opinion and it’s distorted by false information, it discourages public participation,” Angga said.

He stressed the need for platforms to verify circulating information and take action against violations. “We urge all platform operators in Indonesia to comply with national laws,” he concluded.

A wave of public demonstrations has taken place in Indonesia, primarily in Jakarta and other major cities.

The protests were initially sparked by outrage over reports that lawmakers were receiving a new, large monthly housing allowance, seen as excessive amid economic hardship for many citizens.

The situation escalated following the death of a motorcycle taxi driver who was run over by a police vehicle during a protest on Thursday, leading to further public anger and calls for police reform.
