"The MUI expects members of the House of Representatives (DPR) not to say or raise anything that could offend the public," said Masduki Baidlowi, Head of the Information and Communication Division of MUI, here on Friday.
He noted that people are currently experiencing economic difficulties, so members of the House, as representatives of the people, should understand and protect all citizens.
"People are currently facing economic hardship and difficulty finding jobs. They are struggling with many challenges. Therefore, as an institution that represents the people, the DPR should truly understand their plight," he said.
Baidlowi also emphasized that members of the House should avoid making any statements or taking actions that could offend the public.
Mass demonstrations in several regions across Indonesia demanding reforms from the House have claimed one life and left another injured on Thursday (Aug. 28).
An online motorcycle taxi driver, Affan Kurniawan, died after being run over by a police armored vehicle, while another driver, Moh Umar Amarudin, is still receiving treatment.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, emphasized the DPR's commitment to continue improving itself by listening to the people's aspirations, following the demonstrations in front of the DPR Building over the past few days.
She also apologized for the House's potential shortcomings in fulfilling their duties.
"On behalf of all members and leaders of the DPR, we apologize for not being able to fully carry out our duties as representatives of the people. The DPR will continue to improve itself by listening to the people's aspirations," she said in an official statement via video message received on Friday.
Maharani also stressed the DPR's commitment to enabling healthy communication with the public.
