Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), Puan Maharani, apologized and conveyed plans to evaluate the House's performance following days of demonstrations, resulting in the death of Affan Kurniawan.

Affan was a ride-hailing motorcycle driver who was run over by a Police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) tactical vehicle on Thursday (August 28) during a protest in Pejompongan, Central Jakarta.

"First and foremost, on behalf of the members of the DPR and the DPR leadership, I apologize for not being able to perform our duties perfectly," she said after visiting Affan's home with Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung on Saturday.

The demonstrations in Jakarta were triggered by public discontent with the DPR's stance and perceived excessive allowances.

Maharani stated that her party would evaluate, improve, listen to the people's aspirations, and work together to build a better nation.

When asked by media crews about the House members' housing allowance, she answered that it would last until October.

Furthermore, when asked about improving the communication methods of House members, which could potentially trigger public anger, Maharani addressed that everyone should exercise restraint, respect, and appreciate each other.

However, she did not respond when asked about the House member who allegedly fled abroad.

During her visit, she expressed willingness to help Affan's family to continue working and pursue education.

"God willing, the Governor will help his older and younger siblings with their education," she noted.

Maharani would also provide a vehicle for the father, who also works as a motorcycle taxi driver.

In addition, the speaker had asked the police to investigate this case thoroughly.

"God willing, the family will be given strength, sincerity, and fortitude in facing this tragedy. And may the late Afan Kurniawan's good deeds be accepted by Allah SWT," she said.

On the same occasion, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said that his administration would provide the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP) and the Jakarta Excellent Student Card (KJMU) for Affan's siblings.
