“This initiative is a strategic effort to prevent the extinction of local languages, which are part of the nation’s identity and cultural heritage,” said Head of the Language Development and Fostering Agency at the Ministry, Hafidz Muksin, in Samarinda on Sunday.
He explained that revitalization programs are a key priority in East Kalimantan, with preservation efforts implemented through concrete activities such as the Mother Tongue Buds Festival (FTBI).
The festival engages elementary and junior high school students in various competitions, including short story writing, storytelling, and stand-up comedy—all performed in their respective local languages.
The goal is to cultivate a new generation of active mother tongue speakers.
Hafidz added that preserving local languages aligns with efforts to strengthen national literacy.
Last year, the Language Agency printed and distributed more than 21 million high-quality reading books to schools with low literacy levels.
The initiative has received strong support from Commission X of the House of Representatives.
Commission Chairperson Hetifah Sjaifudian emphasized the urgency of safeguarding Indonesia’s local languages.
She presented data showing that out of 718 validated languages, 25 are endangered and 11 have already become extinct.
“East Kalimantan, home to diverse languages such as Kenyah, Paser, and Kutai, will be one of the main focus areas for revitalization,” Hetifah stated.
She also called for greater support for young writers and authors from East Kalimantan to produce high-quality works that showcase local culture.
According to her, these efforts not only help preserve languages but also stimulate public interest in reading—supported by literacy-enhancement programs from the Language Agency.
Additionally, government assistance has been provided to 340 literacy communities across Indonesia, including nine in East Kalimantan, which have successfully contributed to improving literacy rates in their respective regions.
