"We ask the people to remain calm and not to worry. We are here among the people and we are ready to provide protection and security," Jakarta police chief, Inspector General Asep Edi Suheri, stated during an evening roll call at the Parliament Complex on Sunday.
However, Suheri also called on the people to play their part in maintaining a conducive situation in Jakarta, including by reporting potential disruption to public security and order to local police leaders.
The Metropolitan Police, on Sunday, conducted large-scale patrols involving 324 officers to maintain security in the capital after days of protests.
The officers were divided into three groups, with the first group covering North Jakarta, East Jakarta, and Central Jakarta, and the second group assigned to West Jakarta, South Jakarta, and Central Jakarta.
The third group extended southward to the neighboring city of Depok, aside from helping with security monitoring in South Jakarta.
"We conducted the first patrol at noon and carried it out again in the evening," he noted.
The Jakarta police chief promised firm, yet measurable, action against parties that wanted to cause "anarchy" in the capital. It is in line with instructions from President Prabowo Subianto and Indonesian Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, he added.
Also on Sunday, Defence Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin stated that President Prabowo urged unity between the Indonesian Police and the Indonesian Defence Forces (TNI) in maintaining national stability.
"The President emphasized the need for the military and the police to be united, cooperative, and working together in accomplishing the duty of security and comfort for all Indonesians," Sjamsoeddin stated after a cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace.
The president instructed Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, along with the military commander, not to hesitate in taking firm steps against law violations, including attempts to damage public and private properties.
Prabowo also urged them to act resolutely against all matters that may harm peace and public order.
