“The situation in Surabaya and East Java is relatively controlled and conducive,” head of public relations at the East Java Police, Senior Commissioner Jules Abraham Abast, said here on Monday.
Abast stated that since Sunday evening (August 31), the National Police (Polri) and the Indonesian Military (TNI) have conducted large-scale joint patrols to maintain public security and order.
The patrol operation involved 265 personnel from both Polri and TNI, supported by 34 patrol vehicles, including both two-wheeled and four-wheeled units, to strengthen security at key points across Surabaya.
The patrols focused on areas where crowds usually occur, including Ahmad Yani, Raya Darmo, Urip Sumoharjo, Basuki Rahmat, Gubernur Suryo, Yos Sudarso, Genteng, Undaan, Tugu Pahlawan, Indrapura, Rajawali, and Diponegoro.
Abast also urged the public to exercise caution when using social media and not to easily trust circulating rumors, particularly regarding alleged looting, which have been widely shared online. He stressed that any individuals found committing criminal acts would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
In addition, his side called on all elements of society, including security forces, local governments, community leaders, religious figures, and young people, to collaborate in maintaining peace and order in East Java.
“Only through the collaboration of all parties can public safety and security be realized. Good communication between the community and law enforcement will break the chain of crime and create a sense of security,” he said.
The results of the large-scale patrols indicate that all activities proceeded smoothly, traffic flow was controlled, public spaces were safe, and the overall situation in Surabaya remains conducive, he added.
