"I will not retreat even an inch. I am sure the people are with me," he said in a press statement after visiting victims of the demonstrations at the National Police Hospital in Jakarta on Monday.
During the occasion, he expressed his concern for the dozens of victims injured in the incident, both police and members of the public.
The president emphasized that the right to express opinions is guaranteed by law, but it must be carried out peacefully and in accordance with the rules.
He believes that a number of demonstrations have been infiltrated by rioters who intend to damage and burn public facilities, including the House of Representatives (DPR) and Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) buildings.
"Their intention was not to express an opinion but to create public unrest," he pointed out.
According to him, the government would take firm action and thoroughly investigate those responsible for the anarchic acts.
"I will not hesitate to defend the people. I will confront any mafia in the name of the people," he addressed.
The head of state also ordered that all police officers who were victims be promoted to extraordinary ranks as a token of appreciation for their dedication to maintaining national security.
On Monday, Prabowo visited dozens of injured and wounded police officers during the mass demonstrations in several areas of Jakarta last week, which turned violent, at the Kramat Jati National Police Hospital.
Prabowo, who was accompanied by National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, admitted that he felt compelled to visit and see firsthand the condition of the police officers.
"Today, I feel called to visit our wounded officers," he said.
He informed that more than 40 police officers and civilians were injured during last week's protests. However, most have completed their treatment and returned home.
